Chipotle restaurants have just recently decided to list the genetically modified (GMO) ingredients in their foods. Today, on a statement on their website they explained “Our goal is to eliminate GMOs from Chipotle’s ingredients, and we’re working hard to meet this challenge. For example we recently switched our fryers from soybean oil to sunflower oil. Soybean oil is almost always made from genetically modified soybeans, while there is not commercially available GMO sunflower oil. Where our food contains currently unavoidable GM ingredients, it is only in the form of corn or soy.” In some locations such as their Manhattan restaurants, Chipotle says they have switched to rice bran oil from soybean oil.
Some of their dishes which they are working on fixing but that still include GMOs include Barbacoa, Chicken, Fajita vegetables, Rice, and Steak (due to the cooking with GMO Soybean Oil, and their various Tortillas and Taco shells which have GMO corn as well as hydrogenated Soybean Oil.
This is still a great step in the right direction by labeling of food for consumers and we respect Chipotle for putting Consumers first in this regard.
